Deborah Harry - Necessary Evil (Eleven Seven Music)
Paul Taylor

PERHAPS a chance to break out of the nostalgia straitjacket imposed by Blondie's renewed success, Necessary Evil is Harry's first solo album for 14 years.

And it's a right old rag bag of styles (in a good way) with the big mushy power ballad of If I Had You, the clumsy industrial rock of Deep End, squelchy doomy electro pop in Love With Vengeance, the Iggy-revisited punk of Whiteout and the ludicrous Phil Spector-like intro and filthy numbskull groove of You're Too Hot, which is the best song here by a long way.

That Harry still has the appetite to make music as lascivious and wilfully odd as that last track at the grand old age of 62 is a life-affirming lesson to us all.

Released on September 17.
